Brian sent this photo of the back, side view of my home. The side bricks are actually the side wall of my home and the adjoining wall Carlos and David's home. Remember, in Mexico, homes go from one side of the lot to the other, with the open area in the middle.

The left side of home is the staircase to all three floors. The top floor shows the bathroom door on the right, with large horizontal bathroom window and the larger vertical window to the left of that.

I'm so excited, I can't think!

A letter from Carlos!

Hi, This is a letter from my friend, Charles (Carlos) who is my soon-to-be-neighbor in Patzcuaro. Thought you might find it interesting.

Hello friends,
Juan and I had a long talk this morning about our progress in building community here in Eronga, and I was stunned to find out how much we are doing. For example, our various construction projects--we are presently building four houses and about to start one other--are supporting right at 200 people in this area. Our workers are paid fairly and are devoted to us because of this fairness. We pay rock-bottom prices for materials. The company where we buy our materials had to lay off half of its workforce of 8 recently when we had to cut back on building. They are all working again, happily. We do not overcharge for materials as most so-called architects and contractors do here. You pay exactly what you would be charged if you were a Mexican building your own house, and we provide you with the bills to prove it. The land we sell, too, is at rock-bottom in terms of its price, and we do all the arranging of paperwork for you, to say nothing of wining and dining and gently but persistently wheedling the sellers. Our 13 albaƱiles (workers) are the best in the area, and all are used to building houses for gringos, so the plumbing and the electricity are done properly. Even their peones (helpers) are thrilled to be working for us.

We (and when I say "we," I mean our dear Juan with our encouragement and all the help we can give him) are making valuable contacts in this municipio (city office) with the people in local government, who have pledged to help us in any way they can with utilities, roads, and all the necessary papers. They realize just exactly how much we are contributing to this community and are happy we are here and bringing in new money. We are now the third largest employer in the municipio, following the Rosenthals' furniture factory and the municipio itself.

I hope you will forgive me for bragging so outrageously, but I am so proud of Juan (and of all of us). His and Maria's store is bringing in as much as or more than our own pensions put together. I am amazed and thrilled that our pittance has been leveraged into something really important and beneficial for this wonderful village and its hardworking and friendly people. I challenge all of you to try and do likewise. This is the way to change the world for the better.

Let the concrete flow!

(email from Carlos)
Saturday, October 21, 2006
David, Today we are giving a huge fiesta for the thirty or so workers on our building project on La Loma, so our kitchen will be full of cheerful noise all day today. The fiesta is to celebrate the first roof on David Haun's house. Last month we gave a party for the roof on Carlos and Will's house, which should be finished by Christmas. David's house will be well on its way by then, and ours, which has been quiet for a while due to lack of funds, will be back in action in just a week or two. Thanks to our Juan, the whole project is moving along rapidly and on schedule, as well as below cost. Juan is a miracle, la verdad. Carlos

Hola, Dougie and I just returned from our fabulous 8 days on the Lake! The entire visit was magical, thanks our friends and other visitors in Michoacan. Dale and Bob were wonderful hosts for us while the wonderful meals at Carlos, David, Juan, Maria & Fernando's were delightful.

Didi's sparks of energy are sources of enthusiasm for all of us. It was great meeting old and new friends at the Men's Breakfast, Francis' tour of the Malpias, and the party at Las Rosas. Carlos' albandegos have become famous.

La visita de los gemelo's was not only the first time in 40 years that Dougie has traveled away from his wife, but the first time in memory that he and I have done anything together, by ourselves, alone together, since our alleged fraternal birth nearly 62 years ago. (We seem to be so different that some think we were switched at birth and we each have another twin out there.)

I'm looking forward to the next visit after Christmas. Maybe we should start planning more tours and more parties like Didi's Peace Party and the shindigs at Las Rosas. Muchas gracias, Abrazos and Besas, d

Street address in Eronga!

Carlos just sent our street addresses.
Our street is "Avenida Ricardo Flores Magon,"
who was a great Mexican socialist/anarchist
during the Mexican revolution.
Flores Magon was born on Independence Day,
September 16, 1874,
and died in Leavenworth Prison
in the US on November 21, 1922.
The manzana on which several of our
houses are situated is named Las Rosas after our collective,
and the cross street is Calle Lazaro Cardenas,
named after our great socialist president
who nationalized the oil business.
Carlos and David are at Calle Lazaro Cardenas 1.
I am at Flores Magon 1, Tim at #2,
and Carlos and Will at #3.
Carol and Dean are at Cardenas 3,
and their friends at #2.
